Knowing

How do you know for sure that what you think you know is actually true? I’m going to try to help you sense what these different states feel like.

So, try to picture a situation in your life where you were absolutely certain about something.

For instance That a job was right there in front of you and you were absolutely certain: ‘I must do this’ or ‘I must definitely not do this’. The decision to buy or rent a house, or about a relationship: ‘This is the one’, ‘I know it for sure’. A situation where you were absolutely certain, where there was not a shred of doubt and you felt it in every fibre of your being.

Try to recall if there is such a situation and go back to that moment for a moment. The moment of choice or the moment of realisation, the eureka moment, when everything seems to fall into place, when everything seems certain or is certain. Go back to that situation and become aware once more of the feeling of that certainty in that situation.

How did you feel then? And perhaps you feel it again now, simply because you’re resonating with that situation. Where did you feel it? How was your awareness literally situated within your body? How did that certainty manifest itself? How, for example, was your grounding or your connection to the whole back then? How was your energy literally flowing? You probably weren’t doing that consciously at the time, but perhaps you can visualise what it was actually like. So where are you situated within yourself when you know?

Then you can let go of this ‘knowing’ situation for a moment. And, just for a moment, for the sake of contrast, take a situation where you were really trying to figure something out, or simply didn’t know, were a bit confused, or were just doubting: should I go left, should I go right? How does this actually work? You’re bound to have a situation like that somewhere in your life, so bring that to mind and then feel how that feels and where you feel it.

And also, where exactly is your awareness within your system, within your body? Are you present, or not? Are you actually grounded at that moment? Are you more in your head than in your feelings, or not? Then let this situation go for a moment and note in your mind the differences between the two situations. Finally, return briefly to that state of knowing. You can explore what it’s like to move back and forth.

You simply don’t always know at every moment in your life, because everything is a process; you could also say that you’re figuring all sorts of things out in your life and at some point you just know. So there are all sorts of steps needed to get to that knowing, but you can always focus on the point of knowing, that centred point. Where it is simple within you, where it is clear within you, where it flows, where there is actually as little confusion as possible.

Even in confusing situations, you can always sit down for a moment and go to that simple point, and then you know something again; but sometimes the situation is so confusing that you slip back into that confusion.

By consciously seeking out that clarity time and again, you come to know more and more. For example, about situations in your life. You always seek the place within yourself from which you can know, from which you can feel clearly, see clearly. You can always do this.

For now, you could say to yourself a few more times: I know, I choose to know, I focus my attention on the fact that I know, I know. Words have power, and that actually puts you on the vibration of the concept, on the information within the concept. The concept of knowing – oh yes, you can know clearly – can be evoked simply by saying: I know, or I choose to know.

With your decision, you direct the energy, you direct your attention. So just bring it to the fore, say it to yourself: I know, I know, I know. Then feel how your connection with the earth is; feel – we haven’t done this before in this series – how your connection with the cosmos is, with the heart of the cosmos: I know.

You have the ability to focus time and again on your clarity, your ability to know and to feel. That point of ‘I know’ is also a lovely point for going to an outdoor spot, or a church or a stone circle, and simply knowing and feeling.

Do you never get it wrong? Yes, of course you do; all sorts of things can get in the way – associations, interpretations, fixed ideas – but you do create the best conditions.

And by doing it a lot, by going to these kinds of places a lot, it naturally becomes a very clear instrument.

For now, provided you’re ready, you can conclude this meditation for yourself and break your concentration
