Tips and Suggestions for a Good Conversation with a Place

At each location, you will find the steps you can follow to truly experience a power place. But of course, there is much more to say about this.
Below we walk through everything, starting again with the basic steps. You will recognise these from the location pages.
The Four Steps

Step 1

Arrive peacefully, take your time to look around, and create space to ‘take in’ the place. Then find a spot where you feel comfortable standing or sitting. If it feels good, close your eyes and focus. Breathe in and out slowly and ground yourself. Listen to one of the guided meditations or… do it in your own way.

Step 2

Focus your attention on the essence of the place itself. Feel how your body responds to this location. Listen and experience what the place has to share. Resonate with it and let it sink in. Enjoy it!

Step 3

Take a moment to reflect on your intention for your ‘conversation with this place.’
Do you have a question? Ask it! Take your time to receive the answer. The answer may come from the place, or it may come from within yourself… Let whatever arises truly sink in.

Step 4

When you are finished, release your focus and consciously detach from the place. You carry the experience with you, and it may continue to work within you for some time. You can always reconnect with the place even from a distance. Sense what the place does to you in that moment.
Other Ways to Experience a Place
We are very aware that there are many different ways to experience a place. During our travels, we have seen everything: shamanic rituals, tai chi practitioners, dowsers, people working with pendulums, and so on.
Some people prefer a physical approach, others a more intellectual or energetic one. All perfectly fine. What matters is what works for you.
Of course, we hope the tips, background information, and meditations are helpful.
Our core belief is that anyone can feel a place freely, and that there is no single correct way to do so.
However, we do recommend experiencing the place while being truly present in your body. Your body is your instrument here on Earth — it is how you feel and perceive. That’s why there are so many grounding exercises on the site. They help keep your experience literally grounded and aligned with your daily life.

Basic Attitude
The attitude with which you approach a place is very important. Here are a few things to keep in mind:
Be open, curious, expect nothing, and relax!
Let go of everything you have read or heard about a place. These things easily pull you into interpretation instead of feeling. Expectations are the quickest way to end up disappointed.
The good news is that you can create the right conditions for an experience to arise by being open and curious. But what happens next… that’s something you simply need to wait and see.

Prepare Yourself and Set Your Intention
We realise that being open, curious, and without expectations can feel at odds with having a goal, such as: “I must relax, and I’m going to do that here.”
But forcing it or trying too hard is the best way to feel nothing at all.
At best, you end up with a feeling you think or hope you should be having…
Places do not communicate in the ways we are used to, nor through logical reasoning that makes sense to our minds. You truly step into a different world.
This communication bypasses the head it is from heart to heart. That is why we always invite you to relax at every location.
Simply ask yourself why you are here. Perhaps you have a question or another purpose for your interaction with this place. Take a moment to acknowledge that.

There Is No Good or Bad Experience
It is wonderful if you have a profound experience at a place and feel utterly joyful. Maybe you even have a ‘eureka moment’ and receive answers to your most pressing questions. This certainly happens at times, but not always.
Sometimes you simply feel calm or energised also great.
And sometimes you feel nothing at all. That’s just how it is.
But that does not mean nothing is happening.
Sometimes an experience settles in later, in a completely different and unexpected way. This may be because it is difficult to feel something immediately, even though your body has already ‘received’ it.
And sometimes a place simply isn’t “your” place.
In short: let go of as many judgments as possible about what you do or do not feel.
“It is what it is.”
On to the next place!
Power Places Are Living Entities
Places have information, awareness, and knowing. They respond to attention, and you can communicate with them.
This may be new to you. Try communicating with a tree and experiment: begin at a distance and ask for permission; then try the same with another tree without asking. Is there a difference?
Always treat places with respect it never hurts. Just like with people.
Ask permission before entering a stone circle. Don’t stomp around on top of a burial mound. Enjoy the feeling of playing with your attention in a waterfall…
We have a magic word for respect: hello!
From one living being to another. Let yourself be surprised.

Noise on the Line: A Place Does Not Feel Good at All

Sometimes a place does not give you what you hoped for, or you may even feel physically or emotionally uncomfortable. Several things may be happening:
You resonate with old energy or an event that happened at the location.
Sometimes something occurred there in the past. You may feel this and feel uneasy. This can intensify if it touches an old story within yourself.
For example, imagine walking on a site where women were once treated poorly. This might stir old pain within you.
In that case, step away from the place for a moment.
Let your energy flow outside the place and look at your own story. Exercises about this can be found elsewhere on the site.
Then return, feel again, and ask if the place wants to show you something else, something clearer.
Another possibility is that the place is so clear that it overwhelms you.
A place may convey deep trust, for instance, which may trigger your own fears. What to do?
Follow the same steps as above. And always return to the highest possible energetic state within yourself!
And sometimes a place simply is not pleasant in itself and there is nothing to gain.
The solution?
Just leave, and find a delicious coffee or tea with cake somewhere…
Visiting power places is just like life: an adventure fun, sometimes challenging, inspiring, and healing.

Note: You will find guided and written exercises related to everything described above elsewhere on Gofinestera. Enjoy!
