Dolmen of Loon, D15

Hunebed van Loon, officially known as D15, is a Neolithic passage tomb situated just outside Loon in the province of Drenthe. The hunebed rests within a peaceful rural setting, bordered by sandy trails and some forest on the North east side and great view on the other sides. It is one of several megalithic tombs in the region, resembling neighboring sites such as D16 Balloo and D10 Gasteren. The structure is clearly visible and easily accessible, making it a welcoming destination for those interested in the prehistoric heritage of the Netherlands.

Archaeological and Historical Findings

Studies indicate that Hunebed van Loon dates back to the Funnel Beaker culture of the late Neolithic period, around 3500 BCE. The monument consists of large glacial boulders, with upright stones supporting heavy capstones to create a burial chamber. This site retains several original capstones and side stones, with the entrance passage still identifiable. Historical documentation and modern photogrammetry, such as those produced in the Van Giffen 2.0 research initiative, show that while the monument has experienced some changes over time, much of its original structure remains intact. These differences are traceable through comparisons between early 20th-century records and current 3D models. The site was primarily used for collective burials, often accompanied by the placement of pottery shards, flint tools, and occasionally axes.

Accessibility and Visitor Information

Visitors typically reach Hunebed van Loon by walking from Loon village or following designated nature trails nearby. But it is also possible to park next to the site. The terrain presents minimal obstacles, mainly flat surfaces, though conditions can vary with weather, making some sections sandy or muddy. There are no steep inclines or steps, and the path is suitable for most visitors.
Acces is free and open.
