Whistman's Wood

Whistman's Wood is an ancient oak woodland situated at a relatively high elevation in the West Dart Valley near Two Bridges on Dartmoor. Spanning just over seven acres, the site consists of three principal clusters of gnarled, dwarf oak trees, many centuries old. The woodland floor is strewn with granite boulders, all blanketed in lush mosses and lichens, creating a green, textured landscape. The wood is surrounded by open moorland, with panoramic views and the West Dart River flowing nearby. On higher ground to the northeast, visitors can see the remains of over 100 prehistoric hut circles, providing evidence of Bronze Age settlement in the area.
