Vassergrafveld

Vassergrafveld stands out as one of the most notable and visually distinctive Bronze Age burial mound groups in the Netherlands. Positioned on slightly raised sandy ground, it consists of around twenty rounded tumuli (“grafheuvels”) rising gently above the surrounding heath. The open landscape with minimal tree cover allows these mounds to be clearly seen and often approached by walkers traversing the nearby Vasserheide. Additional burial mounds are present on the adjacent Manderheide. Informative signposts and basic panels are installed to provide visitors with background about the site.

Archaeological and Historical Findings

Research indicates that the burial mounds at Vassergrafveld date chiefly from the Bronze Age, constructed roughly between 2000 BCE and 800 BCE. Excavations reveal that these earthen mounds sometimes contain cremated remains or burial chambers. Grave goods such as axes and pottery have been uncovered, suggesting ceremonial practices linked to burial rites. Some mounds were reused over successive generations, reflecting their role as family or community landmarks. Beyond serving as graves, the site likely held ceremonial and social importance, functioning as a spiritual locus for ancestor remembrance and potentially delineating territorial boundaries. The mounds’ preservation and prominence in the landscape underscore their significance during prehistoric times. The area enjoys protection under Dutch national heritage laws as a designated rijksmonument.

Accessibility and Visitor Information

The barrow field can be reached by a footpath starting from the main entrance or parking area on the Vasserheide. The path is roughly 400 to 600 meters long and crosses predominantly flat, sandy heathland. Although generally manageable for most walkers, the terrain can be uneven at points due to natural vegetation and exposed sand, which may challenge wheelchair users or those with limited mobility, particularly in damp conditions. No constructed walkways are present, so visitors are advised to wear sturdy footwear. Access to Vassergrafveld is free of charge.
