Dolmen D6
Situated on the eastern outskirts of Tynaarlo, Hunebed D6 lies within a grassy area dotted with sparse trees and open fields. The monument is a notable arrangement of large, weathered boulders that stand out against the flat terrain. Reflecting the typical environment of Drenthe, the tranquil surroundings contribute to a strong sense of timelessness. D6 is one of 54 such prehistoric hunebeds, also known as dolmens, scattered throughout the province. Other prominent examples in the area include the largest hunebed, D27 near Borger, and the picturesque D7.
The construction of Hunebed D6 is linked to the Funnel Beaker Culture, which erected these megalithic tombs approximately between 3400 and 2850 BCE. Made from large glacial boulders deposited after the last Ice Age, D6 is a typical passage grave characterized by upright stones supporting capstones. Such sites were used as communal burial places, and digs at similar hunebeds have uncovered flint tools, pottery fragments, and other grave items that shed light on the burial customs and everyday life of the people from that period. Although D6 itself has not been extensively excavated in recent times, findings from comparable dolmens suggest that it likely contained multiple burials accompanied by offerings like ceramics and tools. Many related artifacts are displayed at the nearby Hunebedcentrum museum in Borger, which highlights the rich Neolithic heritage of the area.
Hunebed D6 can be reached from Hunebedstraat on the edge of Tynaarlo village. Visitors can easily walk approximately 100 meters from the closest road along a flat, well-maintained path that is accessible to people of all abilities. Visiting Hunebed D6 is free of charge and open to the public throughout the year.
