Dolmen D8

Hunebed D8 is among the notable megalithic burial monuments found in the Netherlands, reflecting the rich prehistoric heritage characteristic of the Drenthe region. Constructed from large glacial stones, this site sits within Boswachterij Schipborg, a forest reserve near the town of Anloo. Surrounded by pine and deciduous trees, the imposing stones of D8, remarkable both in size and placement, stand prominently amid the greenery. Far from being an isolated relic, D8 is one of 52 preserved hunebeds in Drenthe, many accessible via dedicated cultural routes. The combination of peaceful surroundings and historic significance makes it a favored stop for hikers and visitors traveling along the well-known “Hunebed Highway.”

Archaeological and Historical Findings

Hunebed D8 was built by the Funnel Beaker Culture, an early farming society that lived in this area around 3400 to 3000 BCE. The monument consists of large, unshaped boulders arranged to create a rectangular chamber that would once have been covered by an earthen mound. These structures functioned mainly as burial sites for community members, possibly individuals of notable status. Excavations of similar hunebeds have uncovered grave goods such as pottery, flint tools, and personal adornments, highlighting their role as collective tombs. The effort required to move and position these enormous stones speaks to a high level of communal cooperation and organizational ability. Although some parts of D8 have been lost or shifted over time, the monument still exhibits a classic design, with several capstones resting on upright supports.

Accessibility and Visitor Information

To reach Hunebed D8, visitors can park near the main entrance of Boswachterij Schipborg. A clearly marked trail leads approximately 300 meters through relatively level woodland to the site. The path consists of compacted soil and forest floor, generally accessible for most visitors, though natural unevenness from roots and earth may be present. There are no steep climbs or steps on the route. There is no fee required to visit Hunebed D8.

Highlights

Useful details to know when (planning) your visit to this place.

Have a wonderful day visiting the domens!

There are dozens of dolmens in Drenthe (and one in Groningen). If you have time, be sure to visit a few.

Take your time and look around carefully: how is the dolmen positioned, what can you see in the stones and what do you notice about the vegetation?

Walk towards the dolmen from a distance and notice any sensations in your body (warm, cold, pleasant or unpleasant, an emotion, etc.). You can also walk towards it with a divining rod, but make sure you continue to feel for yourself. Choose one or more places to sit quietly and experience what this place does to you.

And... enjoy the peace, nature and atmosphere in this province. Oh, and bring enough food and drink with you, so you never have to rush when you're hungry...

By the way, there is a walking route from the dolmen centre in Borger through a varied landscape past a number of dolmens.
