Dolmens D17 and D18

These two remarkable hunebeds are positioned near Rolde’s medieval church and can be easily reached from a nearby parking area. The well-preserved structures lie approximately 100 to 200 meters apart, allowing visitors to see both in a single visit. Their location in a grassy, park-like environment, complete with benches, enhances the experience. D17 and D18 are often highlighted for their impressive size and excellent condition, appearing frequently in local images and representations. As part of Drenthe’s prehistoric landscape, these dolmens provide a valuable glimpse into the region’s history, with their proximity and conservation status making them especially noteworthy for those interested in the Netherlands’ Neolithic past.

Archaeological and Historical Findings

Both D17 and D18 are associated with the Funnel Beaker Culture, a Neolithic community credited with constructing such passage graves between approximately 3400 and 2850 BCE. Utilizing large glacial boulders, D17 ranks among the larger hunebeds in the area. Each consists of upright stones, called orthostats, supporting heavy capstones, forming chambered burial sites intended for collective use. Excavations around these structures have uncovered fragments of pottery, flint tools, and human remains, reflecting their function as communal tombs. The careful orientation and sophisticated construction demonstrate the advanced skills required for moving and positioning stones weighing several tons.

Accessibility and Visitor Information

Visitors can access D17 and D18 via a short, flat path from the parking area located behind Rolde’s cemetery. The walk covers less than 200 meters on well-maintained terrain, making it suitable for most visitors, including families and people with limited mobility. The route is free of steps or steep sections, and benches are available for resting along the way. Visiting the site is free of charge.

Highlights

Useful details to know when (planning) your visit to this place.

Have a wonderful day visiting the dolmens!

There are dozens of dolmens in Drenthe (and one in Groningen). If you have time, be sure to visit a few.

Take your time and look around carefully: how is the dolmen positioned, what can you see in the stones and what do you notice about the vegetation?

Walk towards the dolmen from a distance and notice any sensations in your body (warm, cold, pleasant or unpleasant, an emotion, etc.). You can also walk towards it with a divining rod, but make sure you continue to feel for yourself. Choose one or more places to sit quietly and experience what this place does to you.

And... enjoy the peace, nature and atmosphere in this province. Oh, and bring enough food and drink with you, so you never have to rush when you're hungry...

By the way, there is a walking route from the dolmen centre in Borger through a varied landscape past a number of dolmens.
