Dolmen D16
Hunebed D16 ranks among the larger megalithic tombs found in Drenthe, notable for its composition of large boulders, some covered by smaller stones, situated on open grassy terrain just north of Kampsheide. The surrounding environment features gentle natural scenery, with grazing sheep and patches of forest adding to the tranquil setting. Within a few hundred meters, other prehistoric sites, including burial mounds, highlight the area's archaeological significance.
This tomb was built around 3400 BCE by the Funnel Beaker Culture, who transported huge glacial stones to construct communal burial sites. The structure includes several large capstones resting on upright stones, creating a burial chamber that has been shielded over time by layers of earth and smaller rocks. Excavations at Hunebed D16, similar to investigations of other nearby sites, have revealed pottery shards and stone tools, suggesting the tomb was used for multiple burials and related ceremonies. The monument's size and state of preservation contribute valuable information about the prehistoric communities in the northern Netherlands, shedding light on their craftsmanship and social organization.
Hunebed D16 is accessible to visitors, though there are no dedicated parking facilities on site. Access involves walking along an unpaved path branching from Lienstukkenweg in Balloo. While the tomb lies within a short walking distance from nearby roads, reaching it requires covering a final stretch of several hundred meters on a dirt track. Visiting this site is free of charge.
