River IJ Amsterdam
The IJ River forms Amsterdam’s northern waterfront and today appears as a wide expanse of open water separating the historic city centre from Amsterdam-Noord. It extends west toward the North Sea Canal and connects east with the Markermeer. Along its banks you’ll find quays, contemporary buildings, shipyards, and well-known spots like the EYE Filmmuseum and Amsterdam Central Station. Ferries run back and forth throughout the day, linking both sides of the city. The IJ’s broad waters and busy shipping routes stand in clear contrast to the narrow canals in the centre, underlining its role as Amsterdam’s long-standing maritime gateway.
