Stalldon Cairns and Stone Row

Stalldon (also known as Stalldown) Stone Row holds the distinction of being Dartmoor’s longest known single alignment, stretching around 859 metres and comprising at least 119 standing stones, with some fallen stones in the southern section. The row runs north to south along a flat hilltop and a southwest-facing slope, beginning near a kerbed cairn at the southern end and leading upslope. The stones are mainly large orthostats, many over 1 metre tall, and the alignment is not perfectly straight, curving gently with the contours of the land. At the southern end is a ring of stones, believed to be the remnants of a cairn, while the northern portion contains upright stones that were repositioned in the late 1800s. The site is surrounded by at least ten additional cairns and forms part of a wider ritual landscape with other stone rows and prehistoric features visible nearby.
