Terp and Church of Hogebeintum
Rising to approximately 8.8 meters above sea level, the Hogebeintum terp is not only the tallest of its kind in the country but also in the area formerly known as the salt marsh coast along the Wadden Sea. Its steep slopes, shaped by extensive excavations in the 19th and 20th centuries, create the striking impression that the 12th-century church and nearby homes perch on the brink of a natural ravine. The church’s ancient masonry and adjacent graveyard evoke a deep historical continuity, while the mound’s radial design, featuring a visible ox path and an ecclesiastical ring, reveals an intentional village layout established centuries ago. Close by, about 500 meters away, stands Harsta State, a historic estate welcoming visitors eager to explore the area’s cultural heritage.
