Utrechtse Heuvelrug

The Utrechtse Heuvelrug is a long, elevated ridge that stretches from the Grebbeberg near Rhenen to the Gooi region around Huizen and Hilversum, standing out in the otherwise flat Dutch landscape. Created by glacial forces that pushed up layers of earth during the Ice Age, the ridge is characterised by rolling hills, sandy soils, dense forests, and open heathlands. The area includes historic estates, castles, and nature reserves such as Heidestein and Kaapse Bossen, creating a varied landscape where woodland and open spaces alternate. With elevations reaching around 69 metres above sea level, the Utrechtse Heuvelrug offers a landscape and ecosystem that differ significantly from much of the Netherlands.
