Virxe da Barca Sanctuary

The Virxe da Barca Sanctuary stands on a rocky promontory in Muxía, along Galicia’s Costa da Morte, directly exposed to the Atlantic Ocean. The church, built in granite, sits dramatically beside powerful waves and wind-sculpted rock formations. Its current Baroque structure contrasts with the raw coastal environment, where large stone formations lie scattered across the shoreline. Among these are notable monolithic rocks such as the Pedra de Abalar and Pedra dos Cadrís, which are closely tied to the identity of the site. The sanctuary is located a short distance from the town of Muxía and is often visited by pilgrims who continue beyond Santiago de Compostela to reach the coast.
