Ghar Dalam Cave
Step down into Għar Dalam, the "Cave of Darkness," a 144-metre water-carved passage tunnelling through the Lower Coralline Limestone on the north-east flank of the Wied Dalam valley, just outside Birżebbuġa in Malta's sunny south-east, a short stroll from St George's Bay. Visitors can wander the first 50 metres of the cave; beyond that, the passage narrows and the ceiling drops, so it stays off-limits for your safety and to protect what lives inside. A modest visitor centre and museum greet you at the cave mouth, framed by gardens of native Maltese plants that spill down toward the valley below. Ranked among Malta's oldest and most treasured prehistoric sites, Għar Dalam also makes a great base for exploring the neighbourhood: the megalithic remains of Borġ in-Nadur and the Roman villa of Ta' Kaċċatura sit close by, together forming a compact trail of history through Birżebbuġa.
