Heathen Chapel

The Heidense Chapel stands beside the historic cemetery of Stroe, on the former island of Wieringen. The small chapel has a pitched roof, Romanesque-inspired arches and a compact tower, while its design recalls the medieval church that once occupied the site. The surrounding landscape of old Wieringen adds to its character, with the chapel standing among roads, farmland and the raised terrain characteristic of the former island. The site is particularly notable for the 2016 stone boar above the northern doorway, which replaces an earlier carving associated with the former church. The chapel also lies along the historic Sint-Jacobsroute, linking it with the tradition of pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.
