Monasterboice Monastic Site

Monasterboice monastic site lies in County Louth, a short distance northwest of Drogheda, surrounded by open farmland that makes its stone monuments stand out clearly. The site includes the ruins of two early churches, a well-preserved round tower rising to about 28 metres, and a group of some of the most remarkable high crosses in Ireland. Among them, Muiredach's Cross is especially notable for its detailed biblical carvings, while the West Cross is the tallest high cross in Ireland. The overall layout reflects its origins as an important early Christian settlement, comparable to nearby centres such as the Hill of Slane.
