Necropolis of Sant'Andrea Priu

Sant'Andrea Priu, one of Sardinia's most extraordinary archaeological surprises, is just a short drive from Bonorva in the Meilogu region of the island's north-west. Carved straight into a volcanic-rock cliff about 10 meters high and 180 meters long, this is no ordinary burial ground: twenty rock-cut tomb chambers, known as domus de janas ("houses of the fairies"), honeycomb the rock face. The star of the show is the Tomba del Capo, an astonishing warren of eighteen interconnected rooms considered one of the largest hypogeum tombs found anywhere around the Mediterranean. Round out your visit with a stop at the nearby Lumarzu spring, a natural water source tied to the area's ancient settlements, the small countryside church of Santa Lucia and the Bronze Age stone towers of Puttu de Inza and Monte Donna, known as nuraghi. If you have time for one more stop, the mighty Nuraghe Santu Antine near Torralba, one of the largest and best-preserved nuraghi on the island, is well worth the short drive.
