Nuraghe Palmavera

Just a short walk from the sea, near Alghero, you will find one of Sardinia's most fascinating ancient sites: Nuraghe Palmavera. Built from sturdy blocks of limestone and sandstone, the complex centers on two connected stone towers, once protected by a defensive wall and surrounded by the remains of a whole Bronze Age village. Today fewer than 50 huts survive, but archaeologists believe as many as 150 to 200 once stood here, a hint at just how bustling this place must have been. Palmavera holds its own alongside other legendary stone-tower cultures, echoing the talayots of the Balearic Islands, the tower monuments of Corsica and the brochs of Scotland, yet it stands apart for the complexity and sophistication of its Nuragic architecture. While you're in the area, don't miss the nearby nuragic settlement of Sant'Imbenia on the Porto Conte bay, or the prehistoric necropolis of Anghelu Ruju, a little farther along the road between Alghero and Sassari.
