Royston Cave

Royston Cave sits beneath the central crossroads of Royston in Hertfordshire, hidden below Melbourn Street and Kneesworth Street. The space is a bell-shaped chamber carved straight into the chalk, around 8 metres high and roughly 5 metres across at its widest point. Its walls are densely covered with carvings, ranging from human figures and religious symbols to animals and geometric designs. Today, the cave is reached through an entrance passage that was added later, which adds to its enclosed and slightly unusual feel. Unlike natural caves, this one is entirely man-made.
