White Horse - Uffington

The Uffington White Horse stretches across the steep slope of White Horse Hill in Oxfordshire, forming a stylised figure carved into the chalk beneath the turf. Measuring around 110 metres in length, its flowing, abstract lines give it a dynamic appearance unlike later, more realistic hill figures. The figure overlooks the Vale of White Horse and sits within a wider prehistoric setting that includes Uffington Castle hillfort and the Ridgeway, one of Britain’s oldest routes. The bright white chalk stands out sharply against the surrounding grass, making it visible from great distances and a defining feature of the landscape.
