Bentheim Castle

The castle rises above the small town of Bad Bentheim in Lower Saxony, close to the Dutch border. Built with locally quarried Bentheim sandstone, its light-coloured walls and solid towers stand out clearly against the wooded hills around it. The complex features a prominent central keep, surrounding defensive walls, open courtyards and later additions used as living quarters. From its elevated position, there are wide views over the surrounding landscape, underlining its historic role as a strategic stronghold. The town below mirrors this influence, with narrow streets and historic buildings gathered at the foot of the hill.
