Brent Knoll

Brent Knoll rises abruptly from the flat expanse of the Somerset Levels, a steep, grass-covered hill that feels almost out of place in its surroundings. At around 137 metres above sea level, it stands like a natural lookout, recalling a time when the surrounding land was often flooded and the hill would have appeared as an island. Near the top, faint earthworks trace the outline of past activity, while the summit offers wide, uninterrupted views across the Levels towards the Mendip Hills and the Bristol Channel. Its isolated position and defensive layout place it among Britain’s hillfort sites, yet its setting in low-lying wetlands makes it especially distinctive.
