Eye Castle

Eye Castle stands as a striking grassy mound, known as a motte, set within a spacious, tree-lined park in the town of Eye, Suffolk. Instead of high stone walls, what you see today is mainly earthwork, which gives the site a different character from more intact castles. The motte rises several metres above the surrounding ground and is encircled by a ditch, while the remains of the bailey, once an enclosed courtyard, spread out into what is now an open public green. Close by, the historic town centre and St Peter and St Paul’s Church add to the setting, placing the castle clearly within its medieval surroundings.
