Genargentu National Park

Meet the roof of Sardinia. Gennargentu National Park, officially the Parco Nazionale del Golfo di Orosei e del Gennargentu, spreads over 73,935 hectares (about 739 square kilometres) and 24 municipalities in the centre-east of the island. Its heart is the Gennargentu massif, a mountain complex that looks silvery in winter and turns deep green or reddish in other seasons. The two highest summits are Bruncu Spina, at about 1,829 metres and Punta La Marmora, the island’s highest point, at about 1,834 metres. From the top, the view sweeps 360 degrees over wild country carved by canyons and deep gorges. For a little archaeology on the side, the nuraghe Ura ‘e Sole stands in Desulo near the Tascusì pass, at about 1,330 metres, and near Fonni you’ll find the Gremanu nuragic sanctuary and the Madau necropolis of giants’ tombs.
