Pozzo della Mensa - Assisi’s Cathedral of San Rufino

Discover a Roman-era well hidden within the medieval cloister of Assisi’s Cathedral of San Rufino. Known as the Pozzo della Mensa, this stone well stands beneath paired arches supported by slender columns in the Canons’ Cloister, beside one of Umbria’s finest examples of Romanesque architecture. The cathedral rises in the historic upper town, where medieval religious buildings share the landscape with much older Roman remains. A visit to the well also offers access to the Diocesan Museum and the cathedral’s underground archaeological areas, revealing layers of Assisi’s history beneath the streets and church buildings.
