Ruta del Cares - Picos de Europa

The Ruta del Cares runs through the Picos de Europa, connecting the villages of Poncebos in Asturias and Caín de Valdeón in León. This approximately 12‑kilometre trail follows the course of the Cares River, cutting through a deep limestone gorge with vertical rock walls rising hundreds of metres above the path. The route is relatively flat compared to the surrounding terrain, as it was originally constructed along the contours of the mountain. Along the way, visitors encounter tunnels carved into the rock, narrow ledges, and panoramic viewpoints over the canyon. The surrounding landscape is characterised by rugged karst formations, sparse vegetation on the cliffs, and river ecosystems at the base of the gorge, making it one of the most visually striking routes in northern Spain.
