Tomb of Saint Francis

Discover the resting place of Saint Francis of Assisi inside the Basilica of Saint Francis, one of Italy’s most important religious monuments. The tomb lies beneath the main altar of the Lower Basilica, within a stone pillar at the heart of the church. The basilica complex occupies the western edge of Assisi, overlooking the Umbrian countryside, and consists of two churches built one above the other. Inside, medieval frescoes decorate the walls and ceilings, while the tomb itself is marked by a simple stone sarcophagus and a votive lamp. The surrounding Franciscan complex is part of the UNESCO World Heritage property recognised for its artistic and spiritual significance.
